Many if not all Au Pairs ask themselves the question: “What do I do after my Au Pair Year? Do I extend? Do I study? Do I do something completely different?” It´s not the easiest decision.
In one of the chapters in my book I talk about this topic. One of the ways to address it is doing a mindfulness.
What is mindfulness?
You may never in your life have heard about this…what the heck is mindfulness?
The definition by psychology today is: “Mindfulness is a state of active, open attention on the present. When you’re mindful, you observe your thoughts and feelings from a distance, without judging them good or bad. Instead of letting your life pass you by, mindfulness means living in the moment and awakening to experience.”
How could that help with your future?
More than you think. Very often we try to make our decisions in our head. We keep thinking and thinking and we believe our very smart brain will have the answer eventually. The truth however is our brain wasn´t made to bring us solutions that make us happy. It was designed to keep us safe.
We are all influenced by others
Many young people make decisions which are influenced by their parents, grandparents, friends, the school they went to, the media. There is no judgement, we gotta get references from somewhere.
But the problem is that very often we listen to others more than to ourselves. And who could make a better decision for ourselves than us?
Mindfulness is a way of better understanding yourself and what you want in life. The skills that you learn will be useful for the rest of your life.
